headliner: Hannah Kay
Hometown: Magnolia, Texas

Hannah Kay is an old-soul country girl with a voice as big, a disposition as sunny, and a style as bold as her native Texas.

Growing up in Magnolia, Hannah was already a prominent figure in the Red Dirt music scene by the age of fourteen, helping sell out 300-capacity venues, including opening for Josh Ward at Big Texas Dance Hall. She also made frequent trips to Nashville for co-writing sessions, notably working with Shane Stevens (Carrie Underwood, Lady Antebellum), Jerry Flowers (Sam Hunt, Keith Urban), and Catt Gravitt (Rascal Flatts, Kelly Clarkson). Hannah Kay was named the 2018 Female Artist of the Year by the Texas CMAs.

A bubbly digital native, she has built her devoted fanbase over the last few years through regular Facebook Live sessions, where fans come to her for advice, exemplifying her girl-next-door persona. Hannah also writes songs inspired by their experiences, further building a deep emotional connection with them.

In 2017, she released her EP Magnolia to Nashville. Though the fun, pop-leaning tracks like “I Hate Boys” were a smashing success with fellow teenage girls, it was the more complex storytelling songs like “I’m Gonna (Darian’s Song),” written in memory of her best friend, that solidified her old-soul traditional country artistry. That sound received high praise from Kelly Clarkson, Blake Shelton, and country legend Loretta Lynn—whose song she covered—when Hannah Kay competed on NBC’s The Voice.

It is a lesser-known fact that Hannah originally auditioned for The Voice in Season 15, an experience that showcased her maturity and years of performing. While singing her heart out without receiving a single chair turn might have broken another teenager on the spot, Hannah quickly resolved to keep her facial expressions stoic, knowing that the singing competition was television entertainment first and foremost. “I knew if I cried on camera, they were gonna air it.” Before her plane even landed back in Houston, the show’s producers had reached out, asking her to return for the next season.

Hannah Kay has performed live on KHOU’s Houston Life and shared the stage with many incredible artists, including Andy Griggs, Jon Wolfe, Tracy Byrd, Shenandoah, Rick Trevino, Scooter Brown Band, Jason Cassidy, and Jody Booth, among others.

“My number one goal is to play the Grand Ole Opry! My second biggest goal is to sell out the Houston Rodeo!”

Hannah Kay now lives in Nashville, and her plans include plenty of live performances—playing two shows a night is not uncommon for her—writing more music, meeting with labels and management companies, and several releases.
